If I were stranded on a deserted island and had to pick one type of dessert to eat for the rest of my solitary life it would be cupcakes hands down! I make cupcakes quite often but can never make them as good as some of the wonderful bakeries out there. I remember visiting NYC and acting like a kid when I walked into Magnolia Bakery. I think I went to the one on Bleeker Street and it was tiny, the air-con was broken and the line-up was out of the door but I still stood there patiently waiting to try their famous cupcakes. I bought 4 different flavours and chowed down on the curb outside of the store. They were delicious at the time but definitely overrated, I have had way better cupcakes. My city of Toronto is actually a Mecca for bakeries and specialty cupcake shops and lately I've found myself testing out many of the varieties out there.
Last week I
tried out the very famous Prairie Girl Bakery located at 18 King Street East. This location is their main location but they
also have locations in Yorkville and First Canadian Place.
Prairie Girl Bakery first opened on April 1, 2011 by owner Jean
Blacklock from Saskatoon. To this day, Prairie
Girl Bakery makes their cupcakes fresh everyday using the best all-natural
ingredients like creamery butter, real eggs, and 70% Belgian chocolate. Prairie
Girl Bakery never uses mixes, artificial preservatives, shortening or lard, nor
do they sell “day old” cupcakes. Any leftover cupcakes at the end of the day
are graciously donated to Toronto’s Second Harvest for distribution to
agencies supporting people in need.
Prairie Girl
Bakery takes pride in providing some of the very best cupcakes in the GTA but
also stays true to a great philosophy of providing customers with friendly and
enthusiastic customer service. The staff is truly dedicated to every cupcake
order and if you are not fully satisfied they will happily refund your money or
replace your order.
When I arrived at the very cute cupcake shop I
was immediately overwhelmed by the scent of fresh cupcakes and my focus was drawn to the trays behind the counter that displayed all of the very perfect cupcakes in an
array of flavours and size. The layout of the store is very sleek and to the
point. You walk in and you buy cupcakes, it is simple and effective! The list of flavours available is long and can be troublesome for the indecisive types. Every week there are ‘treats of the week’ flavours and Prairie Girl also carries gluten-free
AND vegan cupcakes.
I tried the
mini cupcakes which were the perfect bite-sized cupcake! I didn't feel as guilty
eating the mini’s as their regular size cupcake is quite big and loaded with
delicious icing. I tried the vanilla strawberry, chocolate vanilla, red velvet cream cheese, vanilla coconut, chocolate chocolate and their feature flavour mocha chocolate. I can’t
even say that one of these tasted a bit off.
All were very delicious little morsels of happiness. Their icing is not overly sweet and the actual cupcake itself is so light and fluffy. My favourite was the chocolate vanilla, I'm a simple girl so this was just perfection to me!
